Nappy rash

Prevention and first-aid tips

Nappy rash is very unpleasant for your baby and it’s no fun for you either. Baby’s delicate skin is suddenly on fire with itchiness and inflammation. Naturally, as a parent you want it to heal quickly but, primarily, you want to stop nappy rash happening in the first place.

What causes nappy rash?

Nappy rash is usually caused by irritants such as urine or faeces, as well as unsuitable care products that attack the skin’s protective barrier in the nappy area. When combined with the moist environment inside the nappy, which is the perfect breeding ground for germs, the irritation is further aggravated. And if baby is already crawling, the edges of the nappy can also be a problem: they can badly chafe an active baby and irritate their skin.

What should I do about nappy rash?

● Lots of fresh air can work wonders: try to leave baby’s bum nappy free as much as possible. But put baby under a heat lamp to make sure they stay warm enough. If you don’t have one handy, you can achieve the same result with a hairdryer.

● Change baby’s nappy as often as possible: changing baby’s nappy can be a big challenge, but it’s essential in the case of nappy rash. If the skin is already inflamed, you should change the nappy at least every 3 hours. This will ensure that irritants are not in contact with baby’s skin for too long, aggravating the inflammation. Be very thorough when cleaning the nappy area, avoid baby wipes for the time being and, ideally, use lukewarm water for washing.

● Soothe the skin gently: the distressed skin now needs some soothing, and FRESH baby bum cream can provide some first aid. Its rich formulation with zinc oxide, witch hazel extract and cotton extract soothes inflammation in the nappy area and helps to relieve redness and irritation. On top of that, thanks to nurturing oils from controlled organic cultivation, the skin is gently groomed and skin regeneration promoted. FRESH baby bum cream forms a breathable protective film on the skin. It can be applied after every nappy change to prevent nappy rash

What household remedies can I use?

● Curd cheese (quark): this popular household remedy has an anti-inflammatory effect and also helps to cool down baby’s reddened bottom.

● Black tea: if you’ve run out of nappy cream, you can try black tea. It contains tannins that can accelerate the healing process. Apply the cool tea to the affected area with a clean, soft cloth. Repeat regularly.

● Breast milk: there’s nothing more natural! Gently apply breast milk to the sore area and leave it to dry.

Please note: if you see no overall improvement, or if inflammation or open sores are already visible, a visit to the doctor is essential.
